Let me start by saying that I’m a Brooks devotee. I’ve been wearing Brooks running shoes for years, and the only other running shoes I need to wear are actually for cross-training (described below). I do not think I am alone in this, as reviews everywhere on the web are filled with adoration of Brooks running shoes.
Especially the Ghost shoes have got their own devoted fan base. Ghost 13s is the latest version of these longtime favorites. They have a strong 12 mm heel-to-toe drop, which means that the heel end is 12 millimeters higher than the toe end of the shoe. The Ghost 13s also have significant arch support and full footrest for optimal comfort and cushioning.
Brooks says the Ghost shoes are a good running shoe for road running, but I’ve taken my ghosts along on lots of trails, and they’ve worked great as a running shoe — even though they are not waterproof, so I would not take them off. on muddy paths.
The upper mesh keeps the shoes breathable for long runs on hot days, and at 10.1 ounces they are sturdy but will not weigh the runner down.
Nobull is a newer shoe and apparel brand whose target market is CrossFit athletes and the larger functional fitness community. The brand started with Trainers and recently released its Runners, which are available in three styles for men’s shoes: mesh, ripstop and knit.
Mesh Runners have the smallest heel-to-toe drop of all Nobull Runners (7 mm versus 10 mm drop on the knit and ripstop styles). It’s still a pretty significant drop, so if you prefer a flatter men’s shoe, these probably wouldn’t be your first choice.
However, the layered mesh upper and flexible midsole give this sneaker the perfect blend of mobility, traction and support, making them perfect for cross-training training that includes running. I say this from the perspective of a CrossFit trainer who knows that five rounds of a workout starting with a 400 meter run can leave your feet and ankles sore if you are wearing a flat training shoe.
Nobull Mesh Runners are durable with enough extra cushioning to get through sprints, burpees, boxspring and other powerful movements, but stable enough to support you during squats and other stationary movements-basically anyone crossing trains should take a look these shoes.
“Minimalist shoes are a fun thing,” says Mollie Millington, personal trainer and running trainer. “Some people swear by them. People with a touch of the forefoot are likely to enjoy minimalist shoes, while heel strikes may experience pain due to lack of cushioning.”
However, a minimal shoe has an adjustment period. “If you switch to minimal or barefoot shoes, gradually increase miles to both build muscle in the foot that is used to being supported by shoes and make the legs more responsive,” she says.
That said, Topo Athletic ST-3 minimalist running shoes are a great place to start. Reviewers compare the feel of this athletic shoe to running barefoot, but with just enough cushion to prevent stones and roots from sticking at your feet. This minimalist shoe has only 16 mm cushion with no drop from heel to toe.
Because these shoes are so flat, they can act as a training shoe and give you more value for money.
Hoka One One
There is definitely a difference between minimalist and lightweight running shoes. You can have a lightweight shoe that still offers support, stability and cushioning, as opposed to genuine minimalist shoes that are flat and, well, minimally padded.
The Hoka One One Rincon running shoes have a 5mm heel-to-toe drop and offer ample cushioning and heel support — but they come in at just 7.7 ounces. These shoes find the perfect balance between support and speed for a stability running shoe. Their light feel combined with Hoka’s Meta-Rocker design encourages fast cadences.
One consideration: Although these shoes are highly rated for comfort and shock absorption, a few reviewers were unhappy with their durability, noting that the shoes were worn after 150 miles or so. If you only run a few miles each week, it’s no problem, but when you hit 150 miles in two months, it’s a problem.
The most important thing to look for in all running shoes, but especially long-distance running shoes, is comfort, says Millington. “Everyone’s feet are different, so when miles add up, you have to feel good all the time,” she says. “Definitely test the shoes in the store on a treadmill, if you can.”
Millington recommends On Cloudflyer, a uniquely designed racing shoe that uses the space between the outsole and the midsole. The spaces make the shoes lighter and give them more bounce, which can make them more comfortable for longer runs.
Reviews on Amazon are mixed and it seems that people either love or hate these shoes. The fans are dying, but so are those who say, but no one can please everyone.
Salomon has a large number of good trail running shoe options. It is one of the most well-known brands in the trail and hiking community due to the quality and durability of the shoe. Millington says she had great success with the Salomon Sense Ride 3, even though the latest version is the Salomon Sense Ride 4.
These trail running shoes are constructed of tightly knitted mesh and a grippy outsole, equipped with Salomon’s Quicklace laces and built with an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop for support on the trails or on the road.
As for what to look for in trail running shoes in general, Millington says she prefers her trail shoe choices to be waterproof. “You also need good stability due to varying terrain,” she says. “A reinforced toe protects you from roots and rocks, and deep tread helps you grab the mud.”
How I chose these running shoes
Although I have not tried all the items on this list (it would require a lot of running!), I know pretty good running shoes. I have been running for about 10 years now and have worked my way through several pairs of running shoes, from cheap to luxurious.
