Can House Of The Dragon Overcome Its Last Jedi Problem?

After the setback to Game of Thrones season 8, prequel show The dragon house will have to overcome a problem similar to what one was looking for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. When Game of Thrones ended in 2019, it made it as the biggest TV show in the world. Many had long anticipated that it would go up in flames of glory, but instead it simply triggered fires across the internet; to say it was divisive might be an understatement as the final episode of episodes was painted by both critics and audiences.

However, HBO is unassailable. Even before Game of Thrones ended, ideas for spinoffs were published in Westeros and further explored, which will only become a reality with The dragon house. The network has big plans for this universe, with several projects in different stages of development, however The dragon house will be the first and biggest test not only of its viability as a true franchise, but of how much it has survived the backlash.

This sets The dragon house in the same position Star wars the sequel trilogy was in, with The last Jedi quickly becoming one of the most divisive films of the 21st century. While not an exact parallel, as this is a prequel rather than a sequel, there are similar obstacles to overcome and mistakes should certainly be avoided as to how it approaches things.

When Star Wars: The Last Jedi released in 2017, it quickly became one of, if not the most divisive post in the entire saga, although it stood for the very malicious prequel trilogy (which is now viewed more positively). There were a number of criticisms, but at the heart of them was the idea that this fundamentally misunderstood or destroyed what made Star wars and its characters so great. Luke Skywalker, the greatest hero in the galaxy, was a hermit who not only would not take part in the battle, but had even been tempted to kill his nephew. Supreme Leader Snoke, the seemingly great villain in the sequel trilogy, was cut down without revealing anything about his past. Rey, to whom many had speculated in descent, turned out to be a nobody. This triggered an enormous anger, which remains to this day.

It is easy to see the parallels in this with Game of Thrones season 8. For Luke, watch Daenerys Targaryen: the great hero who has a fall many thought was completely out of character or at least undeserved. For Snoke, there’s Night King – an overarching, mysterious villain who is killed faster than expected, with a bit of his backstory revealed. Where there is Rey’s lineage, there is Jon Snows, as critics argue for the confirmation that R + L = J did not matter. The biggest difference is that The last Jedi‘s reviews were mostly positive, whereas critics and audiences both disliked Game of Thrones season 8, but it only gives The dragon house even more difficult because it has more to build back against.

When looking at how The dragon house can overcome the setback to Game of Thrones season 8, then Disney’s answer to Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a lesson in what not to do. With the great controversy then followed by Solo: A Star Wars Storys cash control, Mouse House went in full course proper condition with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The returning JJ Abrams brought Emperor Palpatine back and decided to try to go against The last Jedi. He brought back many of the elements The last Jedi had either ignored or given answers that many considered unsatisfactory – Rey is now a Palpatine, Snoke is a clone, Luke Skywalker is a Force Ghost do capture the lightsaber. Unfortunately, The Rise of Skywalker also ended up getting messy. It was a movie so crammed with retcons, about bringing back half-baked, long-forgotten ideas and about fan service, so much so as trying to end a 40-year-old saga that it ended in a worst-case scenario of both worlds . The last Jedi had already made things tough, however The Rise of the Skywalker ended up fighting to please either its fans or its opponents, only serving to make the setback worse and more for Disney Star wars follows the trilogy as a whole.

In the sense that The dragon house moves beyond Game of Thrones‘own mistakes are perhaps an easier task. At the very least, it does not have to continue the specific story, nor is it challenged to wrap up a narrative that has been many years in the making. It was actually there Game of Thrones season 8 itself was accused of falling down, and so The dragon house has something of a cleaner slate than any other Star wars the film comes after The last Jedi could have had. While it may be easier, it does not make it easy. This is a show centered around House Targaryen, which means there will likely be the looming shadow of Daenerys Targaryen’s lineage and death. After all, it’s still a show based on the same world as Game of Thrones, even though it’s been a long time before people like Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister’s parents were born, let alone them. The success of Dragon of House will to some extent at least depend on how much people are willing to step back into this universe after Game of Thrones’ End.

It will have had the benefit of more time, with about three years at the time of House of the Dragon’s release in 2022 from the Game of Thrones’ series finale; it is a contrast to the two years between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, who also had the Solo sandwich in between. The distance should also help. Like that The dragon house trailer shows, this series is far from Game of Thrones, and then people can – perhaps – put their bad feelings towards the final aside. That it comes from George RR Martin himself is also a big bonus. No one got more criticism for Game of Thrones season 8 than showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, neither of whom are involved in this. As Martin has already written or at least elaborated much of the story, there is of course less room for an adaptation to swing of course, and it can instead hopefully provide the kind of quality that did Game of Thrones so loved in the first place. And the last point may be the most important.

Despite problems with Game of Thrones season 8, it did not turn out to be a bad show due to a disappointing or divisive ending; for several seasons – mileage can vary depending on how many exactly – it was and still is one of the biggest TV shows produced, with a scope and spectacle almost never seen, but it is matched step-by-step of its writing, performances, and all other areas. These are the kind of things people need to remember, especially as time goes on, wounds heal, and repetitions begin, and that stand The dragon house for good. This is not a course correction for a hated property to be corrected, but a prequel to an excellent show that is also very much its own thing and should be judged on its own merits.
