Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Resolves Shooting in Flower City Within 24 Hours – CBS Tampa

CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. (CW44 News At 10) – The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a shooting that just happened at South Great Oaks Drive in Floral City on December 27th. Within minutes, deputies arrived on the scene and located victim one, a 27-year-old white man with multiple gunshot wounds who claimed he was shot and described the car where the suspects may have fled.

While giving assistance to the victim, deputies saw a car that matched the description about 50 meters away.
After ensuring the safety of the victim, deputies approached the car where they discovered victim two, a 21-year-old white man who had also been shot multiple times. Despite attempts to save lives on the scene, the injuries of two victims were not survivable.

Major Crimes Detective Dan Slingerland responded to the scene and began working on this case and the events leading up to the shooting. During his investigation, Detective Slingerland identified two suspects, 20-year-old Jevaris Nathan Dortch and 20-year-old David Julian Murrell, both from Floral City. Based on the investigation, Detective Slingerland thinks the robbery was the motive behind the shooting.

In less than 24 hours after the incident, arrest warrants were received for both Dortch and Murrell, and they were taken into custody on December 28 at 5 p.m.

“Cases like these are devastating to our community,” said Sheriff Prendergast. “Although the first victim in this case was lucky to survive, another was killed during this failed robbery. Due to the diligent work of investigator Slingerland, our community now has some answers and our victims are getting right. As a result, these two young suspects will spend the rest of her life in prison because of her bad decisions.

Their costs are as follows: (No Bond)

  • Jevaris Dortch (DOB 08/09/2001): Intentional murder, attempted premeditated murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and shooting / throwing deadly missiles in residence / transport.
  • David Murrell (DOB 1/04/2001): Premeditated murder, attempted premeditated murder, and shooting / throwing deadly missile in dwelling / transport.
