Flurona: What is rare double infection of Covid and flu in Israel

Israel has recorded the first case of a rare mixture of two diseases, flu and coronavirus, called “flurona”.

Local reports said the patient was a young pregnant woman who was in the hospital, although her symptoms were mild.

“She was diagnosed with the flu and coronavirus as soon as she arrived,” said Arnon Vizhnitser, director of the gynecology department at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva city.

“Both tests came back positive, even after we checked again,” he told a local newspaper Hamodia.

“The disease is the same disease: they are viral and cause breathing, because both attack the upper respiratory tract,” added Prof Vizhnitser.

The Israeli Ministry of Health said it was studying the case to determine if the combination of the two infections could cause a more serious illness.

The woman is expected to be released from the fire on Thursday.

While it is the first documented case to be diagnosed simultaneously with both diseases, doctors believe there are more cases in the country.

“We are seeing more and more pregnant women with the flu. It’s definitely a big challenge to go with a woman who comes in with fever during childbirth, “said Prof Vizhnitser.

“This is especially true if you do not know if it is coronavirus or the flu, so you are referring to them the same. Most of the disease is respiratory.”

Israel on Friday began administering the fourth fax shots to individuals with compromised immune systems to limit the spread of the Omicron variant, The Times of Israel reported.

The country had mandates for outdoor masks in April, making them mandatory only for large gatherings, and cases have been steadily increasing.

Data from the Ministry of Public Health showed that 5,000 cases were recorded on Friday. There have been 1,376,256 infections and 8,243 coronavirus-related deaths reported in Israel since the pandemic began.

On Thursday, the head of the army’s coronavirus task force warned that the health system would “collapse” if Omicron spreads, according to Haaretz.
