How to get out of incognito mode in Chrome, Firefox and Edge

Once you’re done with your private browsing, it’s pretty easy to get out of incognito mode in your various web browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. We’ll show you how to do just that.

Remember that when you close an incognito window, your browser starts to record your browser history. However, you can manually delete this story if you want.

In the sections below, “desktop” refers to Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, and “mobile” refers to iPhone, iPad, and Android phones.

Get out of Chrome incognito mode on your desktop

Closing an incognito window in Chrome on your desktop takes just one click.

To do this on Windows, click the “X” icon in the upper right corner of your Chrome window. It will close your incognito window and all the tabs in it.

If you’re on a Mac, in the top left corner of Chrome, click the “X” icon (red) to close the incognito window.

To exit Chrome’s incognito mode on your mobile, first open your incognito tab. In the tab at the top right, tap the number in a round box.

Press the number in a round box.

You will see all your incognito tabs. To close all of these tabs, tap the three dots in the top right corner of Chrome.

In the three-dot menu, tap “Close incognito tabs”.

And that’s it. Chrome closes all your incognito tabs.

Get out of incognito mode in Firefox on the desktop

In Firefox, incognito mode is called “Private Mode”, but the functionality remains the same. Private mode is the expression you want to see in your browser.

To close a private window in Firefox on Windows, then click on the “X” icon in the upper right corner of your browser.

To close a private Firefox window on a Mac, click the “X” icon (red) at the top left of Firefox.

Exiting private mode is also easy in Firefox mobile version. To do so, tap the number in a round box at the top of the Firefox screen.

Press the number in a round box.

Tap the three dots in the menu that opens in the upper right corner.

From the three-dot menu, select “Close All Tabs”.

Firefox closes all your open private tabs. To exit private mode, tap the mask icon on your Firefox screen.

And that’s all there is to bring Firefox out of incognito mode.

Get out of Edge incognito mode on your desktop

In Microsoft Edge, incognito mode is called “InPrivate Mode”, and this is the expression you want to see in the browser.

To close an open InPrivate window in Edge on Windows, Mac or Linux, click on the blue “InPrivate” label in the upper right corner of the browser.

choose "Private" from the top right corner of the Edge.

From the menu that opens, select “Close InPrivate Window.”

And that’s it. Edge will bring you out of InPrivate mode.

To close all InPrivate tabs in Edge on mobile, tap the number in a square box at the bottom of the Edge screen.

Then tap “Close All” on the screen that opens in the lower left corner.
