Indiana Jones 5 will pit Indy against Nazis again, in 1969 – Exclusive | Movies

If there’s one thing Indiana Jones hates more than snakes, it’s Nazis. Since Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harrison Ford‘s hero has fought against Hitler’s hordes – thwarted their plans, fought with them, or even had them hoisted by their own petard when they interfered with ancient mythical relics. Given that the forthcoming (yet untitled) Indiana Jones5 set decades after the events of World War II, you might think Indy might have a different enemy this time around. But while there’s a lot that’s new in the upcoming blockbuster, some things never change: When Indiana Jones returns to action, so do some well-known terrifying forces.

Empire can reveal that Indiana Jones5 finds our hero in 1969, living against the backdrop of the space race – but the American effort to beat the Russians to the moon brings some uncomfortable truths for Indy. “The simple fact is that the moon landing program was carried out by a bunch of ex-Nazis,” Indiana Jones5 co-writer (and acclaimed British playwright) Jesus Butterworth tells Empire. “How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose…” When he throws Indiana—a man who always looks to the secrets of the Earth instead of the stars—into the age of the astronaut, he finds himself even more of a man out of time. “It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed,” says Butterworth. “It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there — it’s like Reno without gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.’

Enter Mad MikkelsenVoller’s villainous – see above – partly inspired by real-life Nazi-turned-NASA engineer Wernher von Braun. “He is a man who would like to correct some of the mistakes of the past,” Mikkelsen teases van Voller. “There is something that could make the world a much better place to live. He would like to get his hands on it. Indiana Jones wants to get their hands on it too. And so we have a story.”

Indiana Jones 5 – Exclusive to Klaber

It’s a story that mixes fact, fiction, fedoras and fascists – including a major action set set during the Apollo 11 ticker tape parade in New York, which was staged on August 13, 1969 to honor the astronauts. Boyd Holbrook‘s nefarious Klaber (“I’m a lap dog to Mads, and a crazy one at that,” says the actor) in the middle of the historic celebration – see above – but also inspired the Empire‘s exclusive subscribers’ cover art, illustrated by Sam Hadley (and not based on an actual moment from the movie).
