Sometimes a casting announcement (or a potential casting announcement, so to speak) just feels deep Turn right. So it is with the news Variety) That Bridgerton‘s Jonathan Bailey is in talks to play Fiyero in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Bad. In fact, if Bailey wants to spend the rest of his career playing charming, handsome, riotous romantic heroes, this writer says, bring them on!

For those unfamiliar with Steven Schwartz’ musical, Fiyero is the princely third point of the love triangle between G(a)Linda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo). While he first comes across as carefree and careless in the crowd-pleasant “Dancing Through Life”, his relationship with Elphaba unlocks hidden depths of his character. Sound like a roguish viscount you might know?

It’s not just Bailey’s romantic prowess as Anthony Bridgerton that proves he’s the right man for the role. He also has an impressive theatrical résumé featuring the original London production of american psychopaththe Off-West End production of The past five years (directed by composer Jason Robert Brown himself), and the sex-swapped West End revival of Company, for which he won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2019. Fangirls find examples of his vocal ability on Spotify and YouTube; suffice to say he definitely has the chops for Fiyero.

The Bad movie, directed by In the heightsJohn M. Chu, is somewhat infamously split into two movies. In a statement, Chu promised the controversial move would bring “even more depth and surprise to the journey of these beloved characters.” It will probably also mean more commitment for the actors. Bailey is already busy with more Bridgerton (although there is a precedent for the previous season) romantic lead leave after the happy ending) and the new limited series Fellow travelers opposite Matt Bomer.

But being part of the Bad adapting is arguably Bailey’s biggest breakthrough yet, and again, he’s perfectly suited for the role. Let’s just hope the deal closes soon.
