Men bail on Sydney street party as Omicron spreads

At 10:00, another 1,500 tickets were made available [on Monday] for the Elevate Encore show and all were exhausted by 12.30.

The event includes performances by Australian entertainers including Troy Cassar-Daley, Electric Fields, Beijing Duck, Marcia Hines, Leo Sayer, Courtney Act, Ngaiire, The Wiggles and Tim Minchin. There are also live talks with sports stars, pop-up food stalls, bars and the Skyshow lights display made by 500 drones.

The growing number of cases of coronavirus means that smaller crowds gather around Sydney Harbor for New Year’s festivities. Healthy crowds of cricket fans are still expected for the SCG Test which starts on Wednesday, despite growing concerns over more positive cases associated with the competing teams on Monday.

Asked last week whether the epidemic of Sydney’s “hot wax summer” had turned into a whirlwind, Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres said residents should live with the virus, which means “keep 2022 open, stay calm, stay positive”.

“[Elevate] “is a wonderful opportunity to get into the city, it’s an outdoor environment, so it’s the institution we know that NSW Health recommends that people stay in,” he said.

“We try to set up events that people can come to with confidence.”

He said anyone planning to attend events in January should stay home if they were not well, be fully vaccinated and follow public health advice to reduce the risk of transmission.

“Exercise some personal responsibility over the decisions you make,” Mr Ayres said.

The end of the Elevate event coincides with the start of the Sydney Festival of Arts event on January 6. City of Sydney Mr Clover Moore said the event would enable artists and performers to return to work after a difficult two years.

“People need joy in their lives. We’ve been through two difficult years, and so if we can do it all safely and run our city, celebrate our community, celebrate our artists, that’s really important.
