The handshakes are on hold.

This first-round showdown between the Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars is going the distance.

The Stars scratched out a 4-2 victory in Game 6, forcing a winner-take-all final Sunday at the Saddledome.

It’s been seven years since the Flames last advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. They’ll have to wait at least two more days – and that’s the best-case scenario.

Ex-Flames forward Stajan cherishes memories of series-clinching goal in 2015

Seven years later, Matt Stajan can describe this scoring sequence with the same sort of detail that you’d expect if it was Rick Ball or Chris Cuthbert calling it live from the play-by-play booth.

It is a treasured memory.

This was, after all, a series-clinching goal in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Those have, for the Calgary Flames especially, been few and far between.

Flames vs. Stars: Game 6 need-to-knows

The Calgary Flames have two cracks to advance to the second round.

The Flames are currently up 3-2 in their first-round matchup against the Dallas Stars and can wrap the series in Friday’s clash on enemy ice at American Airlines Center.

Game 6 is set for 7:30 pm MT, with the action broadcast on Sportsnet and CBC.
