Siua Wong teenage Roosters forward Phil Gould says is next big thing

Rugby league guru Phil Gould has revealed the teenage forward he says could become one of the best in the game.

Siua Wong, 19, has been named in the extended Roosters squad for their round 24 NRL clash with Melbourne.

The Scots College student has already played seven senior games in the NSW Cup this year, and the Chooks seem keen to get him some NRL experience before the season is done.

If he doesn’t play against the Storm this week, he’s still a chance to suit up against South Sydney for the final regular-season game.

“I think could be the next big thing in rugby league, and for that club,” Gould told Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles with Gus podcast.

“He’s still SG Ball age, still under 19s, but has had a few games in the NSW Cup and has excelled.

“I see he’s now on the (extended) bench, I wouldn’t be surprised at all – particularly if they win this one (round 24) – then I think he’ll get a game against Souths in their final game of the (regular season).

“He could be one of the most outstanding young forwards I’ve seen come through the game in junior football for some years.”

Such is the excitement around the teenager, Gould believes he could fill the void left by Roosters great Boyd Cordner.

Cordner – who captained the Chooks, NSW, and Australia – was forced into a premature retirement last year due to repeated concussions.

He was a superstar junior footballer, and Gould can see similarities in Wong.

“He’s probably as exciting as what a young Boyd Cordner was at the same age when he came through,” Gould said.

“Wong’s got a lot more in the skill department, but he’s a very good ball runner.

“He’s a pretty special talent.”
